Faculty

Johann Malawana

Founder and director of The Health Leadership Academy and Medics.Academy

Dr Johann has extensive experience spanning government, professional, commercial, public sector, and international organisations, garnering an international reputation as a thought leader in healthcare education and training, commercialisation, and leadership. Trained as a medical doctor and obstetrician, he dedicated over a decade to the NHS. Holding numerous leadership positions within medicine, he led large teams and conducted negotiations with the government and the NHS on behalf of the medical profession twice. Previously appointed by the Privy Council and the Secretary of State of Health to the boards of the General Medical Council and Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board, Dr Malawana served on committees focusing on finance, pensions, ethics, and policy work. His impact within these environments has been substantial. Additionally, Dr Malawana was appointed as the Healthcare UK specialist advisor on education training for the UK healthcare system within the Department of International Trade. In this role, he developed strategic policies and partnerships for both the public and private sectors.

Yusuf Karmali

Clinical Programmes Executive- Medics.Academy

Yusuf is a Programme Manager at Medics.Academy, serving as the Clinical Lead for the Medics.Academy Fellows Programme and holding the position of ST1 at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Throughout medical school, Yusuf was awarded numerous prizes for outstanding academic achievement and delivered high-quality peer teaching through student-led societies, in which he held various positions of leadership. His passion for education led him to join Medics.Academy in July 2028, where he began as a fellow and lead author on the Clinical Genetics course. He progressed to become a member of the Medics.Academy team as a Clinical Programme Manager and subsequently assumed the role of Clinical Lead for the highly successful Medics.Academy Fellowship Programme. He is also part of the F|Docs Faculty, where he leads teaching sessions for foundation year doctors, and enjoys teaching medical students as part of the S|Docs programme. His other interests include medical technology and health policy.

Amanuel Mulugeta

Amanuel Mulugeta is a devoted clinician and public health specialty candidate at Sante Medical college. His ardour for healthcare and education has propelled him to make significant contributions to various local and international academic and non-academic projects worldwide. Dr Derek Gallen

Professor Derek Gallen is the former President of the Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME) and serves as the Education Lead for Medics Academy. He holds the position of Postgraduate Dean for Wales and previously served as the UK National Director for the Foundation Programme. Additionally, he has served as the ex-President of the Academy of Medical Educators and was a founding member, previously holding the role of President. While initially trained as a general practitioner, he transitioned into medical education early in his career. Professor Gallen has spearheaded numerous innovative academic training programmes within the foundation years and is the author of several books on general practice and medical education. Currently, his research interests lie in interprofessional education and assessment within the postgraduate curriculum.
